Castaic Lake Report 09-09-2023

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:

The Bass bite is slowly improving as the days get shorter and the baitfish get bigger. The better fish are getting shallower by the day it seems, but with the lake literally busting with Shad and Silverside minnows, the bite on artificial lures remains mostly a small fish endeavor. For those fishing live bait on main lake points, there are some nice fat Bass up to five pounds being caught with some regularity. Otherwise, the usual finesse presentations will get the smaller bites with the wacky worm starting to get the attention of some bigger fish. Topwater lures are starting to come into play as well in the first hour or two of the morning.

Striped Bass:

Despite a no-show on Thursday morning, Striper boils continue on two to three pound schoolies that have been biting topwater lures in the first three hours of the day and the late afternoons all week. By far the go-to lure has been the Lucky Craft Sammy 100 with a feathered treble on the rear hook. Most lures will get action when thrown into white water, but the Sammy will get you blind strikes in between boils and simmers. Trolling has slowed significantly due to most anglers chasing the boils instead of fishing deep during the heat of the day. Alabama Rigs with a small swimbait and a super-fast retrieve is getting some action as well.
