Castaic Lake Report 09-03-2023

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:

Not much of a change going into the rainy holiday weekend. Bass are moving a little shallower but still in the 10-20′ zone most of the day. A well placed topwater bait like a Lucky Craft Sammy 100 or white buzzbait will get a few bites early along fading shade lines on the main lake and secondary points in the Fish Arm. After that, it’s picking away with finesse plastics on the dropshot or splitshot rigs. Underspins and smaller Keitech swimbaits on a 1/8 oz. jighead will get a few grabs when the fish become active on wind-blown rocky shorelines in the afternoon. Smallmouth have been more willing to bite than the Largemouth lately.

Striped Bass:

Not much of a change here either. The first three hours of the day and the late afternoons remain the best times to be on the water. Topwater lures like the Lucky Craft Gunfish 100 and Sammy 100 with a feathered treble on the rear hook have been the most productive lures. Fly trolling with smaller Deceiver patterns on 3 to 4 colors of lead core line will get a few bites when the fish go deeper into the 15-20′ range. Alabama Rigs with a 3.3 Keitech swimbait and a fast retrieve is getting some action as well.

Lake Conditions:

Water Clarity – 5′ to 10′ in most areas
