Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass:

Bass fishing is consistent in the Summer pattern, with fish busting Shad early and late in the day. During the day the bite is tough as the fish go deep on main lake points or suspend over deeper water to avoid the sun. Flukes and topwater lures like the Luckycraft Gunfish are getting the attention of fish to five pounds. Live Shad fishing on light gear is putting fish in the net throughout the day for my clients.

Striped Bass:

Huge schools of five pound and up class fish continue to boil mid-lake during the day in the area around Kong Island and most of the Fish Arm.  The boils diminish rapidly making it hard to get a cast into them. Instead of chasing them we opt to stay in a good area and wait for them to pop up within casting range. 7′ medium-heavy spinning rods and 4000 size reels spooled with 12lb mono help with casting distance and often make the difference between a hookup and frustration. We use Luckcraft Gunfish 115’s which are tail weighted and cast far. We are picking up fish on the trolling fly as well , staying in the areas we find the quick boils.

Castaic Afterbay:

Not much of a change as angling pressure has switched to the Striper bite at the main lake. The deep edge of the grass beds and swim beach have been good areas to target. C3 Baits Shimmy’s on a 6lb Carolina Rig continue to put fish in the net. Bluegill can be caught in the shallower weedy areas on mini jigs, meal worms and red worms.
