Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:
Good Bass fishing continued this week with one to two pound average fish keeping anglers busy. Dropshot rigs continue to produce along with small 2″ to 3″swimbaits and wacky rigged Senkos. We started fishing the Bait Merchant “Caligator”in the Neptune Shad color on a dropshot rig and found it to be a fish-catching son of a gun! Hand poured by C3 Baits in Castaic, this will be a staple bait of mine for years to come. Unbelievable action. Most of the bites have been coming on steeper rock banks and walls, shoals and secondary points just about anywhere on the lake. The water has come up ten to twelve feet in the past week so the fish are spread out and may not be in the usual spots. Keep moving until you find a group of willing biters. The Smallmouth are very active while the Largemouth are in all three stages of spawn, with the bigger models being harder to entice to bite.
Striped Bass:
The Stripers have started to spawn which means you will see fish on the surface that look like they’re boiling but are going thru the spawning cycle. Unlike the Largemouth and Smallmouth that lay their eggs in a nest, Stripers are broadcast spawners like most ocean fish. They lay their eggs and milt on the surface and count on the wind to mix it up.They are almost impossible to get to bite during this cycle. Better days ahead.
