Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:
Another good week of Bass fishing was had by most anglers chasing the schooling “wolf packs” of fish. It’s best to keep moving until you locate the schools. Look for secondary points near the entrance of coves, especially the ones with wind current coming around them. The morning and afternoon topwater bite remains strong along shade lines and points. Sammy 100’s and 007 Riser Baits are getting quality bites. The dropshot bite is solid during the day in the ten to twenty foot range with mostly smaller Largemouth and Smallmouth hitting the usual Finesse worms. C3 Baits Shimmys in the Neptune Shad color pattern and straight tail 4-1/2″ Aaron’s Magic RoboWorms continue to dominate, as they have for years.
Striped Bass:
Surface “boils” were strong early in the week then were reduced to a simmer with the onset of heavy North winds that closed the lake temporarily Thursday morning. Fish are still in the main lake areas in both arms. The boils aren’t lasting very long, maybe thirty seconds at most. I find it best to sit in a good area and wait for them to pop up instead of chasing them around. If you have to move your boat very far you will most likely miss them. The Lucky Craft Sammy 100 in the Ghost Minnow pattern along with Ghost C3 Baits Flukensteins, white Riser Baits and Z Man HellRaizers in the bone or shad pattern continue to be the dominant lures, but just about any topwater bait with some white in it will work. Best to use the one that you can cast the furthest.
Bluegill:
Bluegills continue to bite red worms and meal worms in the shallow ends of coves like Dry Gulch, Utopia and Old SS around submerged brushpiles and shade trees. Keep the bobbers, hooks and worms on the small size.
