Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:
Bass fishing slowed slightly this week as cold weather mid-week and rain on Saturday stalled the spawning cycle temporarily. Smallmouth are post-spawn and on a tear and will hit just about any of the usual presentations and baits. Most of the Largemouth are one to two pound males that are making or guarding spawning beds, but there is a number of bigger fish from three to five pounds in the counts. Carolina rigs and dropshots continue to dominate the finesse plastics bite. Wacky rigged 5″ Senkos continue to produce most of the bigger fish. Green Pumpkin w/black flake and Natural Shad are great colors and have been consistent all Spring. I use the darker colors on overcast days and the natural baitfish colors on sunny days. The water remains very clear with up to 20′ clarity in most areas. A full moon in two weeks and sunny days in the forecast should bring the bigger fish shallow.
Striped Bass:
The schools of baitfish that will eventually bring these fish into range are moving shallower every week, as they migrate to the backs of weedy coves to spawn. The Stripers are pre-spawn too so patience is the name of the game for now.
