Castaic Lake Report 09-27-2026
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:
The huge schools of jumbo Shad and Silverside Minnows are keeping the lake’s Bass population well fed and very lethargic in their feeding habits. 95% of the fishing I’m doing was with Live Shad again this week. The wolfpack schools of five to ten Bass are chasing baitfish in the middle of coves away from the shoreline where the baitfish can’t escape into the weeds, making them easy prey. Lucky Craft Gunfish 95’s and Espetit 95’s are getting a few bites if you are able to target-cast into the blowups. Blind casting surface lures is minimally productive as the fish tend to go back to the cooler water after hitting the baitfish they pushed to the surface. The live Shad fishing has been exceptional again this week, with 20-40 fish per angler in a half-day common for anglers of all ages and skill levels. All other techniques are hit & miss with mostly shoreline oriented resident small fish being caught on the usual techniques.
Striped Bass
Same report as the Bass with the Stripers shallow chasing Shad in the weedbeds. The big schools are split up into five or ten fish cruising the shoreline, pushing the Shad shallow. Making long parallel casts down the shoreline to intercept these fish has been productive if you are in the right place at the right time. Boils are non-existent as they are in shallow water and aren’t able to circle the schools of baitfish as they do when they are in open water. The same lures are working for the Stripers.
