Castaic Lake Report 12-14-2025

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:
Stable high pressure weather has kept the Bass relatively shallow and the algae covering the surface is acting like a blanket, keeping the water from cooling off. The dropshot rig with a C3 Baits Jobu in Red Bug along with the Bait Merchant 7″ Prototype Worm in the Purple Haze pattern continue their dominance as the fish don’t seem to want to chase any reaction baits. Main-lake points and rocky 45 degree shorelines are holding good numbers of largemouth in the ten to twenty five foot zone, with the Smallmouth holding a little deeper. A few fish are being caught on jigs and slow moving crankbaits but it’s hit and miss for the most part. The Ski Arm seemed to fish better this week as the Northeast winds prevailed on that side of the lake.

Striped Bass:
Jigging spoons in the forty to seventy foot zone along main-lake shorelines is the way to go once you locate the schools. Trolling is on the upswing with a few fish taken in the thirty to forty foot zone. Alabama rigs with 3″ Keitech swimbaits and trolling flies are getting the majority of the bites. The cut bait bite has yet to materialize as the water temps are still holding around 61 degrees.

Rainbow Trout:

Another big plant of good sized Mt. Lassen rainbows went in on the West ramp on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning the crowds were shoulder to shoulder and the catching was good. Obviously as every day goes by, there are less and less fish. The bite seems to be better in the morning as there is shade in that area by early afternoon. The usual trout baits and lures are working with the brighter flourescent colors of either getting the majority of the bites in the green water.
