Castaic Lake Report 08-09-2026
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:
As the lake transitions into the mid-Summer bite, the Bass are chasing open water baitfish towards the backs of most of the bigger coves that have deep water nearby. The Bass are no longer sitting on the points and structure spots anglers have been accustomed to and fishing bottom contact techniques like the dropshot rig are mostly turning up a few smaller fish. Topwater action is getting better every day, especially early and late in the day as is typical with the daytime heat. The Shad they’re chasing tend to be small early in the season, so adjust your lures accordingly. Megabass Karashis, 007 Jackall Riser Baits and C3 Baits Flukensteins are good choices and seem to get bit more than their bigger counterparts. This is a special time of year that most anglers look forward to and should only get better until the cold sets in around Thanksgiving.
Striped Bass
Surface boils on one pound fish are now common around the major cove entrances along with some better fish in the two to four pound range. This bite is getting better daily as the baitfish get bigger. As usual the schools can pop up just about anywhere. Typical seasonal spots like Center Point, the Eldeberry buoy line and Elizabeth Canyon are seeing action daily. The cut Sardine bite at the Eldeberry buoy line continues to pay off for anglers with a lot of patience, as they wait for the schools to move thru.
